National Register of Historic Places in Monterey County
The Josiah Merritt Adobe is a singular example of the Greek Revival architectural style applied to the vernacular adobe construction of Mexican California.
While other contemporary structures, such as the Old State Capitol in Benicia, employed the Greek temple form, they were built of stone or masonry rather than adobe.
Josiah Merritt, born in New York State, settled in Monterey in 1850 and became the first Monterey County Judge in 1851. Judge Merritt married Juana de Castro, daughter of Simeon Castro, Alcalde of Monterey.
