When California became a state in 1850, Mariposa County was the largest county in area.

Over time, Mariposa County ceded territory to create twelve other counties: Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Madera, Merced, Mono, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, and Tulare.

This fecundity earned Mariposa County the nickname, Mother of Counties.
