Tulare County was formed in 1852 from parts of Mariposa County. Subsequently, Tulare County lost land to Fresno County in 1856, to Kern and Inyo Counties in 1866, and to Kings County in 1893.

Tulare County was named for Tulare Lake, which was the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes. Drained for agricultural development, the site is now in Kings County.

Western Tulare County is in the agricultural Central Valley and eastern Tulare County climbs to the crest the Sierra Nevada range.

Sequoia National Park is located in Tulare County, as are part of Kings Canyon National Park and part of Mount Whitney.
