Engine Company No. 30
1757 Waller Street
Built 1895

Engine Company No. 30, with an assignment of 27 firemen, occupied this woodframe Italianate building from 1895 until 1918 when the company was disbanded and Chemical Co. No. 5 moved in.

Truck Co. No. 12 was also based here from 1912 until 1956. This company had an enormous westerly first alarm district reaching over the entire Sunset District to the Pacific Ocean.

Until the 1940s, the Sunset District contained vast expanses of sand dunes. Along the beach were summer cottages used by downtown home owners. Photographs of SFFD apparatus show equipment with tire chains. The chains were not for driving in snow but for driving in sand.

In 1956, the building was decommissioned as a firehouse and subsequently sold at public auction. It has been a private residence since.
