National Register of Historic Places in Siskiyou County
Here, in 1873, approximately seventy Modoc Indians led by Captain Jack took refuge from the United States Army, who had orders to move the Indians to a reservation.
The site consists of lava flow formations which create natural defenses in cracks and caves and the remains of about 130 man-made rock fortifications.
Captain Jack's Stronghold is also California Historical Landmark 9.
