5 April 2023
The Beach Chalet is situated near the Dutch Windmill in Golden Gate Park. It was designed by Willis Polk and opened in 1925 with a lounge and changing rooms on the first floor and a restaurant on the second floor. The murals, mosaics and wood carvings were executed a decade later during the Great Depression, funded by President Franklin Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) economic stimulus.
Today the Beach Chalet is a good place to relax with a microbrew and fish and chips after exploring Golden Gate Park or walking on Ocean Beach.
For more information about the murals and the WPA, please see National Register Listing 81000172.
