Freestone was first developed in the 1850s. Today, most buildings in the rural community are wood-frame, wood-clad residential and commercial buildings in the Greek revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and vernacular styles dating from 1870 to 1910. A few additional residential buildings were constructed during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Together these building styles impart a special sense of place.

Eighteen buildings contribute to the district. They were constructed during the period of significance and retain a sufficient level of integrity.
