San Francisco Landmark #276
Gaughran House
2731-2735 Folsom Street
Mission District
Built 1900

The Gilded Age, from 1864 to 1906, was a period of population growth and development in the Mission District. New mass transit lines and the extension of city utilities created San Francisco’s first southerly suburb. Streetcar lines, that began as horse-cars, ran on Valencia, Mission, Howard and Folsom.

The Gaughran House, built near the end of the Gilded Age, was designed by architect James Francis Dunn in the Beaux-Arts style.
