Kenneth McLeod, a carriage maker, built his shop here after Lawrence's Meat Market was destroyed by the fire of 1881. He remained in business for almost three decades until his shop was destroyed by the fire of 1909.

The carriage shop was immediately replaced by the two-story, wood-frame building which now occupies the site. For many years, this building housed the Pastime Club.
