Landmark 244
Garfield Building
938-942 Market Street
Built 1908
The Garfield Building, designed by the Reid Brothers, is an excellent example of the retail building type that was constructed
in the aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.
The original owner of the Garfield Building, Elise Abigail Drexler, was one of the first active woman landowners/developers in
San Francisco. She was born in 1866 in Mendocino as the daughter of businessman William Kelly. She attended Mills College and later
moved to San Francisco, where she had some local prominence.
Drexler began acquiring real estate under her own name in the early 1890s. In 1893 she wed Louis P. Drexler. Upon his death in 1899,
she inherited his estate, which she then managed for over fifty years.
