San Francisco Points of Interest
This Classical Revival firehouse was designed by Charles R. Wilson and built entirely of redwood. The ceilings are twenty feet high and the hose drying tower is over sixty feet high.
Located in Oceanview District, this firehouse was built to protect a woman's college which was never built. In 1896, this area was famous for its wild flowers and frog ponds. After the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, Oceanview began to develop as a residential neighborhood.
In 1896 there was a fire in a munitions factory in nearby Colma, and Engine 33 was dispatched to assist in fighting the blaze, the first instance of mutual aid by the SFFD to a neighboring fire department.
When the Department was converting to motorized apparatus between 1912 and 1921, Engine 33 was the last company to bid farewell to their horse drawn apparatus.
In 1977, the building was decommissioned as a firehouse and subsequently sold at public auction. It has been a private residence since.
