The Uptown Tenderloin is a largely intact, visually consistent, inner-city high-density residential area constructed during the years between the 1906 Earthquake and Fire and the Great Depression.

408 buildings in the district have historical merit. Most of the buildings are apartments, hotels or apartment-hotel constructed of brick or reinforced concrete ranging in height from three to seven stories.

Most of the building in the district were designed and built by a few architects and builders over over a short period of time resulting in a harmonious group of structures that share a classically oriented visual imagery using similar materials and details.
