Elysees, Soufflé, Fauré: October 11

Les feuilles mortes

Tuesday morning we walked along the Left Bank to the Pont Alexandre III, one of the prettiest bridges in Paris. Across the bridge we went to the Petit Palais and saw its art collection. Lunch nearby and a long walk up the Champs Elysees to the Place de Charles de Gaulle, site of the Arc de Triomphe. As I looked both ways up and down the Champ Elysees, I could remember newsreels of the Nazis, and then the Allies, marching through this arch. More than any other time on our European vacations, I was able to really feel the history of the place.

La Serveuse: Manet

That evening we dined at Le Soufflé, a restaurant specializing in you-know-what, which had been recommended by one of Al's co-workers. It really was quite good although it is a bit much to have soufflé for both the main course and dessert.

Two ladies from New England seated next to us reminded me of Jessica Fletcher’s friends from Cabot Cove.

The concert was a good one: Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, and Fauré's Requiem.
