Andrea Sbarbaro immigrated from Genoa to California in 1852. He founded Italian Swiss Colony Wine and became an influential leader of the early wine industry in California.

In 1902, he built Villa Pompeii on the banks of the Russian River. It is an exact replica of the Casa dei Vetti which was built in Pompeii two thousand years ago.
