"Here we came in cite [sic] of the bute [sic] It is a splendid cite [sic] Went down the hill to the flats Spencer & Brill shot a deer." - Hinsdale Truman Shepard, Sep 6, 1852
Cite. Site. Sight. Pronounced the same. Different meanings. The odds are that Mr. Shepard would have gotten it right one time out of three, but he struck out.
Regardless of the spelling, the site is splendid sight.
