San Francisco Landmark #287
Paper Doll Bar
524 Union Street
Opened 1944

Opened in 1944 in North Beach, the Paper Doll Bar was one of the first lesbian bars in San Francisco. The neighborhood, with its cheap rents and Bohemian artists and writers, became the city’s first residential enclave for gay men and lesbians. Bars like the Paper Doll provided a safe space.
