When the Caledonia Adobe was built in 1846, Old Stage Road was part of El Camino Real.
El Camino Real was a six hundred mile road which connected the twenty-one Spanish missions in Alta California. It began at Mission San Diego de Alcalá and ended at Mission San Francisco Solano on Sonoma Plaza.
Today, Highway 101 between San Diego and Sonoma roughly follows the route of El Camino Real.
