Miner's Drug Store
321 Commercial Street
Auburn

Built shortly after the 1855 fire, this building was occupied by Dr. Kinsey’s Miner’s drug store in 1856 then by attorneys Hale and Smith in 1859. Hale was a County Judge and a State Senator. The Lubeck family bought the building in 1881 and used it as a residence. In later years they rented it to a variety of lawyers.

A marker on the building reads:

Historical Landmark

Nearby in this area 1850’s
Placer Press Paper 1855 to 1858
Above the Pioneer Livery Stable, Temple Saloon & Post-Office 1853

According to the walking tour brochure, the Placer Press was located at 215 Maple Street. The brochure does not mention a Pioneer Livery Stable or a Temple Saloon.

I cannot account for the discrepancy between the brochure and the historical marker. Perhaps the phrase, "nearby in this area", means that the press, the stable, the saloon and the post office were not necessarily located in this particular building.
