In 1978 the Schmidt property was deeded to the Josephine County Historical Society. The Society did some rehabilitation in the early 1980's included a new roof, paint, wiring and interior floor coverings.

In 1983 the house was opened to the public as a museum containing many of the Schmidt's possessions.
