Built in 1827, and enlarged and remodelled from 1841 until 1846, the Old Custom House is an excellent example of the application of the Monterey Colonial Style to public building architecture.

The Old Custom House is the oldest public building still standing on the West Coast.

The Old Custom House is California Historical Landmark Number One.
