Marin County Points of Interest
Dennis Patton's steel statue of Sir Francis Drake, erected in 1990, is thirty feet tall. Mr. Patton is known for his many monumental public sculptures in Marin County. The statue is often mistaken for Don Quixote.
On 29 July 2020, early in the morning before it was light, the city of Larkspur removed the sculpture. The city website explained that “the removal is in response to planned demonstrations to tear down or demolish the statue this Thursday in a way that is potentially unsafe. Removing the statue is intended to promote public safety while preserving the statue so that dialogue about its future can continue.”
A month earlier, the city of San Francisco removed a statue of Christopher Columbus for similar reasons.
