When the Alexandria Theatre opened in 1923, it was a leading second-run theater. As befits its name, the architectural design was fever-dream Egyptian.
In 1941, the decor was updated to Hollywood Moderne. Only the pillars on its corner façade remained Egyptianish.
In the 1950s it was upgraded to a first-run 70MM theater presenting San Francisco premiers of South Pacific, Exodus, Can Can, El Cid, The Longest Day and Cleopatra. Cleopatra ran for fifty-six weeks.
The Alexandria closed in 2004.
