Applegarth designed this reinforced concrete building to house a residential hotel named the St. Andrew Hotel. When we photographed the building in 2023, it housed The Inn at Union Square.

"For sixty years this was the location of John Howell Books, a bookstore founded in 1912, and moved to this building in 1924. At that time the interior was remodeled by William C. Hays, at the suggestion of Bernard Maybeck, so that it resembled 'an English gentleman's library set down on a city street'". Source: San Francisco Property Information Website

The building to the right of the hotel was designed by Sylvain Schnaittacher and built in 1909 to house the Argonaut Club.
