National Register of Historic Places in Alameda County
The Phi Delta Theta fraternity was established in Berkeley in 1873. Prominent members included the San Francisco attorney Herman Phlegar and William R. Hearst Jr., both of whom resided in this house.
This building was designed by John Reid Jr. in the Mediterranean style. With its open-air living arrangements, it epitomizes the California adaptation of the Beaux Arts tradition.
