National Register of Historic Places in San Francisco: Doolan Residence and Storefronts
This Doolan Residence is a Colonial Revival residence over storefronts located in the Haight Street commercial corridor. Colonial Revival is a rare style in San Francisco, found mostly in major residences in the Pacific Heights neighborhood.
This building is particularly significant because of its unusual integration of residential and commercial uses on one site. The residence was built in 1903. It was raised in 1907 and converted to a mixed-use residential/commercial
The property symbolizes the history of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, in particular, the hippie movement of the 1960s which was born in the Haight-Ashbury and caused a political, social and cultural revolution that affected youth worldwide.
Located on the northwest corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets, the Doolan Residence and Storefronts are the neighborhood's ground zero. The property has served as a backdrop for countless photographs and as a location for many documentaries about this famous San Francisco neighborhood.
