When the USS Portsmouth dropped anchor in Yerba Buena Cove, the shoreline of San Francisco Bay was one block east of this spot where Montgomery Street is today.

A plaque on A. P. Gianinni's Bank of Italy building at the intersection of Montgomery and Clay marks the spot where Commander Montgomery came ashore.
