Art Moderne - also known as Streamline Moderne, Moderne, Modernistic or Depression Modern - was contemporaneous with Art Deco. Both styles originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925.
The Art Moderne style was inspired by the aerodynamic forms of airplanes, ships, and automobiles of the period. It was the first modern style to gain widespread popularity in America.
Distinctive features of Art Moderne buildings include:
- rounded corners
- curved glass
- ribbon or band windows
- string-course coping
- flat roof
- curved canopy
- smooth wall finish.
