Sonoma County Landmarks
Ransom Powell (1824-1910) was one of Healdsburg's wealthiest and most influential pioneers. He was successful in retailing, agriculture, mining, banking and politics. He made his fortune in real estate and, at times, owned more property than anyone in the area.
In 1892, Powell purchased a fifty-acre ranch one mile west of Healdsburg on West Grant Street. This was his home until his death. From a rough tract of land, he developed a garden spot with one of the most productive fruit ranches in the county. He grew peaches, pears, apples and prunes. After planting more than 150 different rose varieties on the property, he named it "Rose Villa."
