County Landmark 93
Cavedale Cut-Off Marker
255 Cavedale Road
Eldridge
Built 1915

Cavedale Cut-Off is one of the more unusual county landmarks because it commemorates a community-funded public road rather than a battle, building or person.

The road was completed in 1915 to provide a shorter route into the rugged Cavedale area and the Mayacamas mountains. The project was unusual because it was financed by private donations from local ranchers, farmers, and landowners, rather than by the county. One contributor, E. E. Hickin, donated $165 which was a pretty penny at the time.

The road was important because it:

  • Connected Sonoma Valley with ranches and homesteads in the Cavedale district.
  • Improved access toward Trinity Road and Napa County.
  • Replaced much longer and more difficult wagon routes through the hills.
