The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church that we photographed on 9 June 2026 is not the historic building. The historic building is gone.

The building that I photographed is not the historic church. The historic church was built as a conservatory in the late 19th century and remodeled as a church in the early 20th century. The building that I photographed was built in 1960.
The design of the original church evoked a wine barrel. To my eye, the new church, in its expanse of paved parking lot, evokes a beached whale, not a wine barrel. Some things do not scale well.
On 14 July 2024, Fr. David Galeana, pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cloverdale, wrote a letter to his parishioners that read, in part:
"As all of you know, due to severe rotting of the structural beams and the roof of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we made the difficult but necessary decision to close it 14 months ago due to major safety concerns. With the complexity and constraint of St Peter's financial situation, a decision must be made regarding this Church. Speaking with the Finance Committee and after exploring different alternatives, we must make the difficult decision to sell Our Lady of Mt Carmel.
"With a very heavy heart, I inform you that Our Lady of Mount Carmel is now being prepared for sale."
