Bird and Dinkelspiel Store
2145 Collinsville Road
Birds Landing
Built 1875

The Bird and Dinkelspiel Store was constructed at this site in 1875. It was John Bird, one of the stores proprietors, whose exploration and entrepreneurial activities along the Montezuma slough led to the settlement of the town of Bird's Landing.

General stores like the Bird and Dinkelspiel Store represented an essential commercial outpost whose presence in an isolated landscape offered a sense of civility and stability to those considering relocating to more remote areas.

Architecturally, it is an excellent example of the National style: a vernacular adaptation of the Greek Revival style popular in the United States from 1830 to 1850. The building retains a high degree of integrity to its appearance in 1875.

When we photographed the Bird and Dinkelspiel Store in May 2006, it was undergoing a major renovation. The owner plans to reopen it as a 21st Century general store.
