Merchants National Bank, designed by H. H. Winner, is an elegant rendition of the later period of the Classical Revival style, a transitional style where classical ornament evolved toward modernism with classical detailing abstracted, stylized and minimized.
American Architecture, by David Handlin, defined the later period of the Classical Revival style as "a somber, subdued and aloof version" of the earlier period.
