National Register of Historic Places in Storey County
The McCarthy House is a well-preserved example of the vernacular architecture used for working-class houses in the Comstock Mining District.
The house is located downhill from the commercial C Street in the heart of an Irish-immigrant neighborhood. Local tradition maintains that wealthier families lived uphill from C Street whereas working-class families and the poor lived below the commercial zone.
The McCarthy family built the house in 1875 shortly after they purchased the property. The building survived the Great Fire of October 26, 1875 which decimated much of the community.
