Descent to Goose Lake

Descent to Goose Lake It is easy to picture a wagon being mashed to atoms while attempting this descent.

Applegate Trail Marker 32
Descent to Goose Lake
US 395

The marker reads:

Applegate Trail - Descent to Goose Lake

"Traveled ... to Goose Lake. The descent ... is sidling and dangers. While we were nooning here 2 wagons of other trains were upset and mashed to atoms" - Simon Doyle, Sep 19, 1849

Reading this marker, I was surprised to learn that hardy pioneers "nooned." I thought nooning was a modern indulgence limited to privileged women in Beverly Hills and the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
