San Francisco Landmarks
The San Francisco Municipal Railway, which began service in 1912, is the oldest municipally owned transit system in the United States. The Twin Peaks Tunnel and the Laguna Honda Station opened to the public in 1918.
The tunnel was vital to the development of residence parks in the western part of San Francisco, including Westwood Park, Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood. Laguna Honda Station combines Mission and Neoclassical architectural styles. Michael Maurice 0' Shaughnessy, City Engineer from 1912 to 1943, oversaw the construction of Laguna Honda Station as well as the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power Project.Source: Adapted from the San Francisco Landmark Designation Application dated 14 September 2004.
