This bronze sculpture by George Geefs was traditionally called Roman Gladiator.

Recent research into the Midwinter Fair of 1894 identified the figure as Leonidas, King of Sparta, who died at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. (The battle was depicted in the 2006 movie, 300.)

Exhibited at the 1894 Midwinter Fair, the sculpture was moved to the spot where M.H. de Young turned the first spade of dirt to begin construction of the fair.

The sculpture contributes to the Golden Gate Historic Park District.
