This bronze sculpture by Thomas Shields was purchased by M. H. de Young and presented to the city for display during the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. The statue remains in its original location on Museum Drive across from the de Young Museum.

The press has been mistakenly identified as a wine press because of California's wine industry. The child at the feet of the worker hides an apple while holding a straw, which is missing. (The child is not visible in our photographs.)

The statue was originally a drinking fountain. Some stories say it held cider, not water.

The sculpture contributes to the Golden Gate Park Historic District.
