National Register of Historic Places in Mendocino County
The Central Pomo people held religious ceremonies here, with singers and dancers occupying the center of the circular room and visitors arrayed along the walls. Dance, which had faded following the Gold Rush, was revitalized in the 1870s with the coming of the ghost dance from Nevada.
By the 1890s, the Pomo had incorporated features of Christianity with traditional beliefs. The building, with its cross atop the entryway, represents the last phase of the evolution of Pomo religion.
