National Register of Historic Places in Mendocino County
Buckridge Ranch House, built in a vernacular style called I-house, is (was) the only unadorned I-house in the Point Arena area. This style arrived in the United States with English settlers in the 17th century and continued to be built for over two centuries.
An I-house is rectangular. It has two stories, with two rooms on each, and a symmetrical facade. In the Virginia and the Carolinas a full-width front porch became a common feature. Although the builder was probably not trying to design a house similar to those popular in the American Southeast, the building displays all the characteristics of a Tidewater I-house; however, the board-and-batten siding is typical of the early settlement of California.
We do not know if the Buckridge Ranch House still stands. We were stopped enroute by ominous no trespassing signs which seemed to mean business.
