The main span of California Bridge 11-17 is a divided Howe through truss design. The west approach is a Pratt through truss. The total length of the bridge is 4,389.3 feet The longest span is 292.0 feet.

Work was started by Johnson Western Company on the substructure and approaches in March 1947. The Judson, Pacific-Murphy Corporation was the contractor for the superstructure. Cost was one-half million dollars.

The bridge replaced the last state operated ferry on the Sacramento River. The ferry boat was sent down river to Stockton to serve as a standby unit in the San Joaquin Delta.
