This 12th century Cistercian abbey flourished for about two hundred years before falling on hard times due to religious dissension and, finally, disuse. It was saved by the intervention of the writer, Prosper Mérimée, in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1873 a program of restoration began and continues, oh so slowly, to this day.
