Landmark 19
Golden Era Building
732 Montgomery Street Between Washington and Jackson
Built 1852

The building is named for The Golden Era, San Francisco's leading literary journal during the 1850's and 1860's. Among the contributors were Mark Twain, Bret Hart and Thomas Starr King.

The cast iron pillars in the front bear the inscription, Vulcan Iron Works 1892, but experts say that the building dates from the early 1850's and that the front was probably remodeled to provide large openings for warehouse use.

The photograph shows the 700 block of Montgomery Street near its intersection with Columbus Avenue and Washington Street. From left to right the buildings are: Golden Era, Genella, Belli, Odessa and Transamerica Pyramid.

The Golden Era Building is in the Jackson Square Historic District.
