Hops were once the major crop grown in the rich agricultural land around Sloughhouse and other parts of Northern California. The Signorotti farm, the last of Sloughhouse's family-owned hops farms, was featured on the television series, California's Gold.

Two California Historical Landmarks associated with hops growing and processing in California are the Walters Ranch Hop Kiln in Sonoma County and the Site of the Wheatland Hop Riot in Yuba County.
