National Register of Historic Places in Sacramento County
The Brewster House is significant both architecturally and historically. The house was built by the Sawyer Brothers circa 1869-70 for John Brewster, first Federal Postmaster of Gait. The house was in the town center as the original Galt courthouse and jail, built circa 1875, are next door.
The Brewster House, a formal Italianate building, represents an architectural style unusual for the region, and in its virtually unaltered state remains an essential part of the architectural history of the area.

When we photographed the Brewster House in 2006, it was occupied by shops.
