Mineral County was carved out of Esmeralda County in 1911. The county seat is Hawthorne situated on US 95, The Silver Trail, about 130 miles south of Reno and 300 miles north of Las Vegas.

Mineral County is bounded on the southwest by Mono County, California, and on its other sides by the Nevada counties of Churchill, Esmeralda, Lyon, and Nye.
