St. Orres
36601 Coast Highway
Gualala
Built 1929
Remodeled 1970s
Reopened 1977

The hotel was originally named Seaside Hotel. There was a general store and there were gas pumps. There were ten rooms for loggers in the summer and fishermen in the winter. There were five small cabins in a meadow out back.

The original building had redwood framing and siding. The interior was finished with tongue and groove paneling.

In the 1970s, the building was partially dismantled then rebuilt. A century-old mill in Philo was taken apart to salvage 10”x10” timbers, some of them 44 feet long. The timbers were hauled to the coast on an old logging truck and incorporated into the St. Orres.

It may be coincidental, but the architecture appears to be influenced by the Russian buildings at Fort Ross about thirty miles south on the Coast Highway.
