Alameda County was not one of the original counties created in 1850 when California became a state. The county was formed in 1853 with land transferred from Contra Costa County and Santa Clara County.

The word, alameda, is Spanish for "a place where poplar trees grow" and is common in Spanish place names.

In the 2008 Presidential election, 78.9% of Alameda County votes went to Obama and 19.3% went to Bush.
