SOMA (South of Market)
Built 1924-1926

Increases the boundary of the National Register listing for the Hale Brother’s Department Store to include three additional buildings.

36 Fifth Street is a ten-story steel and reinforced concrete building. The Stevenson Street buildings are twin eight-story, reinforced concrete structures built in 1924-26.

The three buildings were used as a grocery store and warehouses and offices for Hale Brothers Department Store.

The photograph shows the west side of Fifth Street between Mission and Market. The tallest building, the one in the center, is 36 Fifth Street. The most distant building, the one at the left of the photograph, is the Chronicle building, home of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. Next is the Greek temple of the Old Mint. In the foreground is the neoclassical Hale Brother’s Department Store.
