Santa Cruz County, originally named Branciforte County, was one of the original counties of California. It forms the northern coast of Monterey Bay and is one of the eleven counties of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Spanish settlers established Mission Santa Cruz in 1791. The mission church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1857, but a replica was erected in 1931.
