Chosen by the National Park Service for its central location within Crater Lake National Park, Munson Valley is the headquarters and main support area for the park.

The unique rustic architecture and the surrounding park landscape qualified the district for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Crater Lake Superintendent's Residence is a National Historic Landmark separately listed on the NRHP.
